Goodbye Armoires, Hello Media Dressers
Armoires were once the darling of the American bedroom. It was a large piece of well crafted, and often ornate, piece of furniture that could not be ignored as a focal point of the bedroom. It also evolved into having the versatility of blending a dresser, a mini-closet, a TV storage space and, even in some cases, hidden compartments for jewelry and valuables. But a funny thing happened on the way to the bedroom, technology changed the landscape.
There was a time, generations ago, when Armoires were needed as an extra mini-closet, so to speak. Home designs during that time included many smaller formal rooms and walk-in closets were extremely rare. Storage for clothing was just not at the top of everyone's priority list, but this was also a time when teenage daughters did not demand shoes and designer jeans for ever occasion. Truthfully, each member of the family seems to have more "stuff" these days.
Armoires were then asked to do double duty when, in the mid-1900's, TV's were gaining in popularity and were no longer just a luxury for the rich. Soon, it seemed as though nearly every home in America had a TV in the Living Room or Den. As the price of TV's continued to decline it was getting more and more common for families to own more than one TV and a common place for the second one was in the master bedroom.
It was about this time that furniture designers recognized the need to transform the armoire into more than just storage for clothes and the armoire was given a technology makeover. By modifying the upper section with multiple shelving layouts and a removable back panel, designers gave the armoire the flexibility to offer storage for clothes or adding a TV to a bedroom that could easily be hidden out view behind the doors. As technology continued to evolve, a single coax cable was now accompanied with a cable or satellite box or even a VCR or DVD player and the armoire was about to burst at its seams.
Recently, the armoire finally did burst, as the standard TV was replaced with the modern wide screen flat panel TV's. These wider format TV's could no longer be hidden inside. Many people; however, got used to having a TV in the bedroom and didn't want to give that up. On the positive side, the newer flat screens were not the obtrusive elephants of the rear projection tube style TV's that required so much space. These slim new modern displays could be hung on the wall or placed on a dresser. Again, furniture designers went back to their CAD systems, no longer drawing boards (another casualty of technology), to create a "new" piece of furniture, the Media, or Entertainment, Dresser.
These new Media Dressers were designed to be a bit taller than a standard dresser, to lift the TV closer to eye level, and some styles offer top drawer fronts that fold down to reveal components, such as a cable or satellite box or even a DVD or Blu-ray player. Again, these versatile pieces were not dedicated to the TV alone, as designers know that bedroom furniture requires storage for clothes, jewelry and other personal items. The Armoire will likely not go away completely, as there will always be a need for additional bedroom storage that may not include a TV, but their popularity will never be what it once was.
