Can you actually believe that cherry picking Zsolt Erdei finally calls out a real fighter, Bernard Hopkins?
Do you think Bernard Hopkins will fight him or does Erdei have to make a bigger name for himself first?:http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/columns/story?columnist=rafael_dan&id=6626727
I actually give Hungarian-born Erdei full credit here. Unlike Sven Ottke, Erdei actually has a bit of boxing talent and guts, seeing as how he's not afraid to face decent fighters, and he's done something Ottke was scared out of his mind to do - leave his country and fight here in the United States to build up a name for himself.
Erdei was a pretty good Light-heavyweight champion. In fact, during his reign, there was somewhat of a debate as to who was the real light-heavyweight champion of the world at the time. Erdei's name was mentioned in the discussion, along with Roy Jones, Jr. and later, Antonio Tarver.
Erdei would make 11 defenses of the WBO light heavyweight title, and beat a solid fighter, Julio Cesar Gonzalez, to win it. He then relinquished the title to fight at cruiserweight, where he won the WBC cruiserweight title in a very good fight with Italian Giacobbe Fragomeni. Erdei then relinquished that belt and is now fighting here in the United States, having won his two fights here (against Samson Onyango and Byron Mitchell, respectively).
Erdei utilizes the classic stand-up European style, with very little head movement, and some lateral movement. He is not an especially hard hitter, but his power is just enough to keep an opponent from getting too comfortable. He has a solid right hand, decent hand speed and a very good chin, and is durable.
I would like to see this fight happen. Hopkins I feel would win this fight, provided he can do what he does best and that's slip, dodge, jab, counter punch, and use his masterful footwork and boxing skills to win on points. Erdei can make it a close bout, but in the end, he's too much of a stand up fighter to beat B-Hop.
Make it happen.
