Logo Design Do's and Don'ts
When it comes to designing the best logo for your business, working with a knowledgeable and experienced logo designer is invariably best practice. Still, your input as the business owner is ultimately what your designer will go by when your logo is developed. Some do's and don'ts to keep in mind when it comes to logo design include:
• Do choose an appropriate logo design. Your logo must appeal to your target market or niche, represent what your company has to "say", and come across as professional. While your logo cannot possibly tell your company's entire story, it should give the viewer of the logo a hint, idea, or feeling about the brand at first glance.
• Do keep your choice of logo design simple. A complex logo design is rarely appropriate. A simple logo that is "to the point" is more of an asset than one that is confusing to whoever is looking at it. Likewise, whosever looks at your simple logo will be more likely to remember it as opposed to trying to remember a more intricate design. (Such is how the human brain is hard wired).
• Do avoid trends. While a current logo trend may look cool now, it may seem outdated and out of place a few years down the road. As a business owner, you're in it for the long haul, and so should your logo.
• Do keep it versatile. A scalable logo can have the same effect on a small promotional refrigerator magnet as it does on the side of a building. Be sure that your logo will look just as good on a billboard as it does on your business card. Along the same line, your full color logo should be just as effective when it is printed in black and white.
• Don't go for a design that clashes. Unity is important in logo design. Select fonts and colors that won't clash with one another.
• Don't use photographs in your logo. This ruins the scalability of your logo because your logo can't be made bigger without seeing the individual pixels in the picture.
• Don't go for a DIY logo design. Sure, you made an A in graphic art during your freshmen year at community college. But that doesn't make you qualified to be a logo designer.
• Don't skimp on budgeting for your logo. While logo design is more affordable than ever before, you do get what you pay for! Budget for a quality logo and you will not be disappointed. Go with the cheapest guy around and you just might be. Your logo design is an investment in the profitability and continued growth of your business. A well-designed logo is an expense like any other. After all, you can even deduct the cost of having a business logo design developed as an expense on your taxes!
