Deer Antler

Deer Antler Shed Hunting Tips

The deer shed their antlers yearly especially during the winter season. Antlers are replaceable and shedding is dependent on supply of food, weather, snow coverage and the altitude. Shed hunting has become a popular sport over the past decade and it is a fun activity that the whole family can enjoy.

The Quality Deer Management (QDM) has helped balance the population of the older deer family creating an ample rate for the hunters. However, others hold that antler hunting has led to Quality Deer Management. There are different kinds of shed hunters even those that have never hunted before and the techniques they use to hunt vary.

Timing when to hunt for the antlers usually varies in different regions. Factors like weather and food can also cause these variations. Some of the best times to hunt are March and February though one can still find the antlers before or after the peak period. To be able to time the shedding of the antlers precisely, you can observe the deer using pictures from the trail cameras or a pair of binoculars as they feed.

In the summer the deer use the same routes between the feeding and bedding areas. But this changes during the fall when the breeding season begins as they follow the female deer using their scent. Tracing the deer trails is important and on the bedding areas, one is likely to find the shed antlers as this where they spend most of their time. Shedding of these antlers usually starts late in the winter. During this time, the deer bed on the southern slopes where there is more sunshine and protects from the cold winds. Most of the inexperienced hunters think that the feeding areas are hard to penetrate but where there is long grass that can cover the deer; one is likely to find the shed antlers.

Finding a pair of antlers is very rare. As deer avoid traveling in bad weather, they yard up in the snow and when the snow has melted, one will be able to find the antlers sometimes even an identical pair.

In times of emergencies the deer can use shortcuts that include hay fields where the trails are established and do not remain changed year in year out. Walking through these trails one is likely to find the antlers.

The sizes of antlers that one collects are a guide as to what to expect in the hunting season. If one has hunted before they can use the knowledge they have gained to be able to draw a map indicating where most of the deer are likely to travel.

One of the places that these antlers can be found is under low branches that are hanging which tend to bump on the loose ones, creek bank and places that the deer jumped fences. These areas should be searched thoroughly for these great finds.
