is a futon a good idea for me?
i have an awkwardly small room and i'm thinking of a wooden slat futon frame w/ an 8" mattress ( i heard that w/ wear that will taper down to 6" the minimum for not feeling slats) the way i see it
PROS
+ i could maintain the function of a couch (been sleeping on one for 2yrs)
+ i'm turning 18 this year soon i'm going to be taking college classes, getting a job ( oh rofl in this economy) and moving out, should be easier w/ a futon then my mammoth sized couch.
+ just redid my room and a futon seems to be more customizable
+ I'm used to the chore of turning mattresses
CONS
- i'm 6' 3" and not sure that i could stretch out on a futon
- i'm +200lbs and nervous that if i get a wooden futon the slats would break or at least creak when i sleep
- i've heard a lot of shit about feeling through a mattress to the slats
also any tips or suggestions? i'm considering an A-frame, lounger (w/ armrests), or automatic. (w/o arm rests)
Yes! Futons have come a long way since cheap and uncomfortable. Futons can come in queen sizes which would be 6'8 so you have plenty of room to move around. For the small room you could get an armless frame to save space and allow for the extra length. A solid hardwood futon frame supports up to about 750 lbs (as long as you're not jumping on your bed you shouldn't have to worry). Plus most come with warranties for that exact reason. Get an innerspring for comfort and support. Springs are made of steel so that your mattress won't taper down, and with any decent mattress you'll never have to worry about feeling the slats.
My younger brother (21) has slept on one every night for years. He's 6'2, +250lbs and destructive to boot. These days futons can customize to anyone- no one gets left out.
Bad Economy? It's Not That Bad...Really
