Those Who Attempt To Cheat At Sports By Taking Drugs Can Give Sportspeople A Bad Name, But There Is A Small Difference As To Why Drugs Are Acceptable In Some Scenarios
In the sporting world, there are exceptionally strict guidelines about what what will and will not be approved of when it comes to improving a participant’s performance, and almost all sports also have a zero tolerance opinion when referring to recreational drugs (other than legal drugs such as alcohol).
Almost all people would probably agree that those who attempt to cheat by using drugs should be barred from taking part in their sport and quite properly so, but think a little more deeply and on occasions there are doubts to be raised about exactly where the line lies between right and wrong.
One thing to weigh up is the health position of the sportsperson. Whilst using steroids over a period of time to boost up the body and improve stamina is completely disapproved of, what about the asthma sufferer who uses a steroid inhaler to deal with attacks. Those drugs are still assisting that sportsperson’s performance, even though they are permitting them to carry on taking part rather than endeavouring to gain an unfair advantage. Not many people would believe that an asthma sufferer should be deprived of the option to enjoy their preferred sport, but one or two would suggest that in both cases, drugs are being utilised to enrich performance.
Similarly, those who rely excessively on having great vision to excel at their sport of preference – golfers, for example – can have Laser eye surgery if they would regularly need to wear glasses to take part, but they can also ask for Laser eye treatment to embellish their vision even if they would not actually be diagnosed at a regular eye test as having to use corrective glasses or lenses. Surely there has to be an argument as to whether having Laser eye surgery to amend vision which is not recognised as defective is much the same as taking drugs to increase performance? But there is no legislation by any sporting body to ban Laser eye treatment or demand that those who opt to have such an operation should advertise the fact.
As is easy to see, something that seems to be quite a uncomplicated case of right and wrong quickly becomes a much more tricky situation if these questions are asked. In the end, it is a question of what the difference is between providing assistance to reduce the effect of a recognised health problem and approving of enhancements to areas of the body which, at that moment, are not medically viewed as being defective.
