Is freedom only an illusion?
From 30 years ago:
"The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way, and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theatre." - Frank Zappa, 1977
While I agree with Zappa, I believe the idea is incomplete. Is freedom today, in the form which is offered by the media and the military, that tyrant liberty which demands the blood of peasants around the world, is it an illusion? Yeah, I mean, from Camelot to Kennedy it's been one disgraceful lie to get people to send their kids to kill one another.
On the other hand, freedom is indomitable, absolute and ever present. We are never un-free. The Master helps us excuse ourselves by closing the door. He shuts us in a cell and we pretend that we are not free. The left tends to do that. We can't stop them, because we are not free. They are too strong and we are too weak. And so we repay our Master's service.
History is proof that no man is ever unfree. We are ever more free as the cages and brickwalls mount because they allow freedom to become a concrete thing. Freedom is breaking the wall or escaping the cell. Freedom is exposing the hacks who have us running in laps. Freedom is choosing to honor democracy and get the Corporations out of the White House. When the man beats you, you are free to beat him back and you will find out, and you will be surprised, just how strong and free you really are.
Not that I would know, I am free to get up from this desk and never come back, but you see I am un-free.
