Why would anyone want to condition their hand into Iron Palm...?
..., for example, when the conditioning will lead to health implications in old age?
What are the things they are planning to go against with their conditioned hand, that any other MA defense (or a simple handgun) can't do?
The way I understand it, the context in which Iron Palm training becomes relevant is in relation to the practitioner's skill in martial arts. In the old days in China, most people trained in martial arts for self defense and as part of their job(bodyguards, security escorts, soldiers, etc..) So it is assumed that most opponents they encounter would be skilled in some form of external martial arts. Iron Palm is then considered as the next step or a highly advanced form of training to gain an advantage over other well trained martial artists. By training and conditioning your hand, you get to have an edge over others. Today, it's true that most people who train in it do so for the coolness factor. Still, there are some rare individuals who do train in it as the logical extension of their internal martial arts training. These are mostly the dedicated internal stylists who study the internal arts like the authentic Tai Chi styles, Bagua and Hsing-I, etc. Unfortunately, most people today are too impatient with their fastfood mentality and do not want to commit as much time to the training as the masters of the old days did and therefore only undergo half a5sed training which in the end doesn't give them the results they wanted. Add to that the fact that a handgun is readily available today, so I can understand why you would question the practicality of training in Iron Palm.
