The UK's Best Bars
Whether it's a stylish hotel, classic cocktail lounge or hidden speakeasy, one thing is certain: Britain knows how to do a great bar.
Unsurprisingly, London boasts some of Britain's best bars. Zensai, on Inverness Street is a stylish Thai restaurant and bar, serving delicious food in a tranquil setting. The Loft on Clapham High Street is decked out in modern New York style with a remarkably hefty cocktail menu. Subterranean bar, Detroit on Earlham Street is slightly eccentric but intimate and a local favourite.
The Library & Garden Room in the Lanesborough Hotel whisks you to the old world where leather lounges, bookshelves and cigars are bar essentials, and Montgomery Place on Kensington Park Road is the perfect place to hang out, rat-pack style. Mix with Clapham elite at Lost Society on Wandsworth Road, a decadent 16th century barn, opulently decorated or head to Anam, on hip Chapel Market, oozing with class and style. Village East, Bar Red, Sketch, Albannach, Lab Academy and Oxo Tower are also worthy of mention.
The Scottish capital of Edinburgh is up there with the best of them, with some superb choices. Bond No.9, in Leith is a fantastic champagne bar, assuredly stylish but with a relaxed and friendly vibe. Order yourself a martini at the traditional Bramble Bar and Lounge on Queen Street or take in the sumptuous décor and handy bartenders at Dragonfly, in the Grassmarket. Rick's on Frederick Street is the place to be seen, but be sure to dress for the occasion. The Dome on George Street is an authentic 1930s cocktail bar housed in a beautiful building once the Commercial Bank Of Scotland.
If you are in Leeds, you'll be pleased to find an array of stylish drinking venues in the cities north. The Reform on Merrion St has a relaxed atmosphere and is a local favourite with a good choice of continental beers. Mojo, and Verve, another two Merrion Street hangouts are also worth a visit. Mojo is famed for it's classic rock music while Verve serves up a mixture of R'n'B and pop.
Manchester's best include Keko Moku, in the bar-saturated northern quarter. A buzzing tiki-style bar, decked out in bamboo and neon lights, popular with students. Obsidian, a basement restaurant bar on Princess Street boasts a tasty fusion of Chinese and Indian cuisine along with great Italian beers off tap. Enjoy Sunday night jazz sessions at Velvet on Canal Street or search out cutting-edge cocktail bar Socio Rehab, a hidden gem along Edge Street.
If you know where to look you will find some fine drinking venues and boutique hotels in Newcastle away from the stag and hen do revellers. Artistic types will love The Cluny, a converted warehouse overlooking the river with rooms at the back for an art gallery and live music. Tokyo, a hidden gem on Westgate Road is also worth a visit.
If you are in Glasgow, visit Rogano, a local institution. Reminiscent of twenties decadence, it's art deco interior is inspired by the Queen Mary Ocean Liner found at Glasgow docks.
With so many identikit urban bars lining the streets of Britain, taking the time to discover a truly great bar, with a genuine un-manufactured atmosphere and all the top quality essentials could make your night.
