I have a two year old red maple tree. The past two years?
it has bloomed beautifully. This year it's spotty in places where the leaves have not come out. 3/4 of the tree has leaves. Does anyone know what I should do - what to feed it - I would appreciate the help. Thank you. I live in the Northeast.
Wow - what fantastic answers - thank you so much!!!
Ideas bouncing around my ever shrinking brain:
Freeze damage when the leaves were emerging......yes it can happen on one section only. Excessive cold over winter....it would have to be sub zero!
Herbicide damage (weed killer) either airborne drift from a neighbor or something applied to the soil below.
A root problem........was it planted balled and burlapped......was the cord removed from the trunk (could be below ground level). Roots not moving out into new soil but staying in ball thus not getting water/nutrients.
Planted too deep. The top of the root ball should be at the top of the soil, not buried under several inches soil. (planting holes dug too deep allow the tree to settle on the soft dirt thus the tree sinks)
These are just a few ideas.......cure, well, first look at the trunk. Is there a cord or has the ball sunk too low. Remove the cord and with the ball too low, remove surface soil out about 10 feet all around the tree so the root ball top is no deeper than 1/2 inch down and the the soil slopes away from that. You can put a loose mulch over the top to hide the fact the tree is in a hole.
Give the tree more time. If it was a frost, leaves will come.....usually. This is still a baby tree so can't guarantee full leaf out.
By mid summer you'll know what is dead and should be pruned away.
In mean time make certain the area under the tree, both the root ball and area beyond, are getting enough water....it must be moist at least 18--24 inches down. Then again, you haven't put the tree in a soggy area where it is drowning from too much water??
If it was herbicide damage, well, the tree will decide if it wants to live. Remediation is tough at best.
