Keep "soft" hardwood floors clean and polished?
My husband and I just moved into our new house a month ago. The previous owners offered to refinish the soft hardwood floors as part of the closing deal (and the floors were already in fantastic shape, especially considering their age!). So the floors are beautifully sealed and shiny, so much so that furniture is reflected in them.
I'm unsure how to keep them looking great when cleaning. What should I use? I've heard conflicting arguments for and against microfiber mops. And what products should accompany dry mopping? Is there a decent polisher on the market? How often should I polish?
For now I just use a soft bristled broom to sweep up debris and only use the central vac hose in corners and along baseboards.
Obviously all furniture has felt pads on the feet to avoid scratches, and we don't wear shoes in the house.
After sweeping & vacuuming the floor well put vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray 2x2 sections of the floor~use a soft cloth & remove the vinegar with a circular motion. The vinegar smell will disappear as soon as it is dried. This will make the floor super clean. If you feel you need to help maintain the color of floor put 5 tea bags in a pail with warm water. Let steep 10-15 minutes. Remove tea bags & apply to floor with mop (leave out the sugar of course). Test this recipe in an inconspicuous place to see the results before doing the whole floor. This works great on Pergo floors too. My Mom has had wood floors all my life & she swears by these recipes. Hope this helps to answer your questions. Happy Housekeeping!
