should i put insolation under my tin that will cover my oak barn?
i have a 50 x 100 all oak barn that is 20 years old, i am going to cover the roof with tin and insolation, the debate is should i use insolation on the sides under the metal
my metal guy said that the oak barn would serve as the insolation, the oak would be like r30
with a tin roof on a barn with a high ceiling you will get virtually no benefit from any typical attic type insulation. i would put a reflective metallic coating on the outside of the tin roof. that will help to reflect some of the suns heat in summer. in winter, it's gonna be colder than you know what anyway.
most barns arent real tight so there is a ton of air flow through the walls and what not. also most barns have high ceilings so that the interior space is huge and conduction/convection will do what they do, (ie keep the interior about the temp of the outside temp).
