Why Did A Small Fall Cause My Laptop Screen To Go White In My Dell Inspirion E1405?
My Dell which is 2.5 years old was knocked off a couch armrest and landed on its top. Ever since the screen has been white. The laptop reboots and when it hits the login screen I can see faint colors of blue and some vertical lines that move when I move the touch pad mouse.
Contrary to anything else I've found on the net regarding this issue my laptop does NOT display anything at all (screen doesn't recognize a connection) when attached to an external monitor.
I took apart the screen and made sure all the connections were intact but it still didn't work.
Did my inverter get f*cked?
Did my video card get unseated or break?
Did the screen actually break from the impact? (No cracks at all)

If you can see anything on the screen and it is relatively bright, the inverter and video card are most likely working properly. If you can log into Windows and adjust the brightness, you should be able to tell for sure if the inverter works (if brightness does change when you press the buttons). When you plug in an external monitor, you must press the function key to change the output (I think it's Fn+F8 on Dell); just plugging it in won't work. You never specified in your question if you did press these buttons, so that might allow you to see the output. If the output on the external LCD is fine, you know the internal screen is busted. LCDs are fragile and since your laptop was dropped, I would bet it's damaged internally - happens quite often.
