Can I exclude the zipper in a pattern if I use stretchy fabric?
I am making a Star Trek TOS dress costume for Comic Con and I bought a similar pattern. However, the pattern includes a zipper which is not in the original outfit. Since I bought stretch fabric, can I exclude the zipper?
Maybe. Depends on if you have a machine capable of applying the ribbing needed for the old costumes -- it's usually a difficult task for a beginner with a straight stitch only machine, but easy with zigzag or a serger.
IIRC, there was an invisible zipper in the shoulder seam and up the collar ribbing in Nimoy's costume in order to aid dressing in makeup. Might want to consider that trick. (I was a docent at a science museum loaned TOS and ST:TNG uniforms for a show.)
Was the pattern you intend to use drafted for stretch fabrics? Or does it specify wovens? If you have a pattern specifying wovens, you may find it looks baggy in a stretch knit, and you may have to go down a size to get it to look right, or find a pattern for a knit. Or better yet, find a knit pattern.
