How can i clean my white Highland Pony?
I recently bought me and my mum a beautiful Highland pony. I have only ever had show ponies before, not natives apart from a section c. Bonny (the highland) is the most lovley pony i could have chosen for me and mum. BUT her mane is about 2ft long, and her tail nearly touches the ground. she also has ALOT of feather. i have purchased a tailgator bag, and am going to get an all in one lycra hood which will cover all of her body. the tailgator arrived today, like 5 weeks after we got her home. she has already been out in the field and her tail is absolutly FILTHY! i dont have any blue shampoo. I was wondering if anyone could tell me some house hold products which i can use on her tail. i am not willing to use bleach, because her skin is very sensitive. Hope soemone can help
thanks! =)
Cripes, you've taken a leap to the other side, haven't you?!
Highlands are very special, I adore them and did so many years before they got fashionable, when ridden Highland classes could barely canter, and I'll tell you straight away your new pony is light years away from your show ponies. Every show pony I've ever encountered has made a deliberate effort to stay away from mud, it's like it's built in. Similarly, it's built into Highlands that they ought to be in the highlands. They WILL get filthy. They'll find the messiest boggiest bit of land to call home, mine goes feral all winter and has a great time out on the hill teaching my childrens littler ponies how to be true natives. I have only ever known one Highland in close to 30 years of knowing them who's liked to come in at night, they are happiest hairy and out.
Put a long loose plait through the mane and tail, it'll take a bit of the length out of it and help to keep it a bit tidier. You'll have to redo it every few days or it'll get knotted. For goodness sake do not trim a thing, I know what show pony people can be like when let loose with a hairy, and it's not right, nor does it look nice! You won't be able to bath her properly until the weather improves massively so stick to grooming, you can hose the mud off her legs and put a bit of pig oil on once a week to help keep the mud off.
Enjoy your pony
How's she bred?
