How many total yards of fabric will I need for a twin-sized quilt?
I want to make a simple block quilt with three different fabrics. Each block will be 12" square, so in total there will be 54 blocks for a 6X9 quilt. Since I severely suck at math, how many total yards will I need for the quilt top?
thank you! I'm not actually a beginner lol. This will be my 6th quilt, but it's only the second one I've made without a pattern. But I am very, very bad with math.
6' x 9' = 72" x 108".
Cotton fabric for quilts is usually 42 - 45 inches wide.
You can only get three blocks from one width of fabric; nine from one yard.
6 + yards* = 54 blocks.
After sewing together with a 1/4" seam allowance, your block will be 11.5".
Add 1/2" to each block for a finished 12" block.
*Add an extra 1/2 yard for the seams and for the uneven cutting by the fabric store personnel.
