My interpretation is that all men are flawed; Lincoln, as well as all other political leaders was imperfect. He was, in fact, despised by exremists on both sides of the pressing issue of the day----the Civil War.
When we talk about "speaking words against the other" this has also, sadly, existed forever. Today, it's called "smearing", but it has an actual name in formal debate---it is known as an "ad hominem" attack, an attack on the person of the opponent rather than on his ideas----recently, Martin Luther King was called an "uppity nigger" by many who opposed integration.
I assume you mean the 20th century, as we are only a few years into the 21st. Leaders often have their reputations either grow or fade as time passes. Harry Truman is now viewed as one of our great or near great Presidents, while John Kennedy's stock has fallen. History is the ultimate judge.
