How to tell when nestling has come out of shock?
Hi, I found a nestling Brown Thrasher. More like rescued. My dog had destroyed the nest, and mauled one chick to death. The other has a torn wing. Mama fled and I would return her baby to her, but Im worried about his/her wing.
The chick went into shock after my dog dropped him to chase the adult. There is a deep gash on his wing, and we are unsure about any internal damage. Aside from his now-crooked wing, he appears to be doing better.
I have already contacted multiple rescues and rehabilitators. Of all the days, they picked today to leave me with an answering machine!
I have experiance in hand-raising parrots and the like, but never an orphaned songbird.
I have him in a well ventilated box, with a heating pad beneath. When I took him inside, I noticed his crop is nearly empty. I know you shouldnt feed a bird in shock, but the poor chicks gaping and peeping. All I have one me are mealworms and adult bird feed.
Help me?
Feed it dry dog food soaked in warm water. Make a gruel out of it and feed the bird with a chopstick or straw. Get it to a rehab ASAP.
