Time Out...........?
I have a 19 month old daughter. Like all children she pushes her boundaries and retreats when I get to her level and tell her no and distract her. The one one thing that I can't seem to break her of is hitting. NO ONE in her life hits. It isn't modeled to her through my actions and she stays home with me and doesn't watch anything but Veggie Tales, Sesame Street, and Baby Einstein. So I know it's not from t.v. So i have started making the punishment for hitting going to time out for one minute spans. My mom tells me this is a terrible thing to do to a child so young. It seems to be working though. She hits a lot less frequently but when discussing this with my mother she says that she stops out of fear, and I think she stops because she knows the consequence and I'm consistent. Just wanting to know other peoples opinions on whether or not this is too young.
You are doing the right thing by threatening a punishment and following through with it.
One thing my baby Doc came up with though which works for me is to limit when I use the word "No".
My Son is almost 2 and really listens to me when I say "No" because I ONLY use it when he is doing something that will hurt him. If you use "No" all the time, they learn to ignore it, or worse, they learn to repeat it back to you.
When he is doing something I do not like, I say something like "I don't think so", or "Are you supposed to be doing that", or "That's not yours", and sometimes even a noise like "Eeh Eeh".
We didn't "Baby proof" the house when he was born. All I did was put away my swords and the pointy things and some of the glass objects. I stuck the things in the outlets and locked up the cleaners. I have not had a problem with him leaving stuff alone, because that's the way I was raised. He doesn't touch stuff at other people's houses, and I didn't either when I was a toddler.
