Can I lay tile over formica countertops, also, i have a cabinet question?
how dark can oak cabinets be stained without having to use paint... Is it possible to make them look as dark as walnut or cherry wood? Also, is there anything you have to put down before laying tile or just put it directly over the counter tops & grout it
my boyfriend and I would like to do a mini remodel in the kitchen but our cabinets are in great condition and we want to avoid demo with both the cabinets as well as counter tops. We are also on a budget and would like to do it for under 400 bucks
I've been remodeling kitchens and bathrooms for over 20 years and I would not recommend setting tile over formica! Even if you sand it first, I don't think the surface would be rough enough to accept the tile mastic (adheasive). Not to mention that it would be faster to do it the right way. I would recommend that you go to a tile shop and ask lots of questions.
The right way...
Typically you remove the old counter top (decking), lay down new plywood and the concrete board, screwing it down using a 4"-6" pattern. If there is any flex in the surface you are going to tile, a tile and or grout can and will crack.
Before you do anything I would like to point out to you that a tiled countertop is considered a high maintenance counter top by most contractors, unless you used dark colors and dark colored grout.
Light colored grouts can be a pain to keep clean, even if they are sealed properly. And all the grout lines create a valley for crumbs and filth to gather.
You can stain the oak as dark as you want, but if the wood already has a finish, it must be sanded off first. You want to start with bare wood when applying stain.
